How to plan wood deck refinishing

Before refinishing a wood deck, check its condition and the finish manufacturer’s instructions. Surface treatment does not repair loose connections or damaged framing.

What you'll learn

  • Why deck condition comes before finish selection
  • How to identify product directions and possible paint hazards
  • When to consult a qualified professional

Step by step

  1. Assess the condition

From a safe position, note peeling finish, loose components and visible deterioration. Keep people off any area that may be unsafe.

  2. Identify the existing finish

Check your records or ask the installer or finish manufacturer what is on the deck. Product compatibility and preparation vary.

  3. Consider paint hazards

If the home or painted surfaces are older, review the EPA’s lead-safe renovation guidance before disturbing paint. Consult a qualified professional if you are unsure.

  4. Read current product instructions

Follow the selected product’s directions for preparation, protective equipment, application and cleanup. Do not assume one drying interval or tool is right for all products.

  5. Discuss repairs first

Ask a qualified contractor to assess loose rails, damaged framing or suspected rot before applying a finish.

Safety note

Sanding or disturbing old paint can create hazardous dust. Consult EPA guidance and an appropriately qualified professional before disturbing suspect paint.

For older painted surfaces, read the EPA lead-safe renovation guidance before disturbing the finish.
